The walkway at Trevi Fountain will stay in place throughout the construction period.
On Saturday, Rome's mayor, Roberto Gualtieri, opened an elevated walkway in front of the Trevi Fountain, providing access for visitors as the iconic Baroque monument undergoes maintenance. Tourists lined up to cross the temporary walkway, which will remain throughout the project, expected to wrap up by year’s end in preparation for the Vatican's Jubilee 2025.
Gualtieri praised the “truly spectacular” view from the steel bridge, with officials highlighting the unique perspective it offers. Open daily from 09:00 to 21:00 (last entry at 20:30), the walkway’s hours on Mondays and Fridays start later at 11:00 to allow coin collection. Up to 130 visitors can use the walkway at a time, though some have expressed disappointment at the fountain’s drained state behind plexiglass barriers.
While local merchants worry about potential harm to the fountain’s travertine, city preservationists have assured that the structure is safe for the monument.
